At the clubhouse, some time ago we had an interesting visit from a local horse riding group. They came to discuss the interaction between horses and cyclists on the road.
From the discussion we found out that as 'prey' animals, horses can get very skittish when fast moving and silent things like cyclists approach them, especially from behind and also that some riders and even horses may be hard of hearing or deaf.
On the rides I have been on I know we are always careful around horses and approach more slowly and call out ahead but I have shared with you some points gleaned from a 'proper' guide to how we can all get on safely on the road as prepared by the British Horse Society.
Some key points:
Let riders know you’re there - Call ahead Slow down, pass wide and on the right Pass in small groups Be visible when riding on tracks or roads Keep your eyes and ears open
