Time Trials - What are they all about ?
Often referred to as the “Race of Truth”, the time trial is in some ways the purest of all road cycling disciplines.
In a time trial, each rider rides alone to cover a course of a given distance as quickly as possible.
Our Thursday Evening League courses are 10 and 11.3 miles long and they alternate each week.
Isn’t this just for racers ?
Not at all – our evening league attracts a mixture of the serious and dedicated time trialists as well as those looking to measure their own performance and improvements over the year. Its quite a social event too.
What kind of bikes are used?
Just about any road-worthy bike can be used, though a road bike is generally going to let you ride more quickly than a mountain bike, and a more aerodynamically designed time trial bike will be faster still. We have categories for recumbent and ‘fixed’ wheel bikes too.
How do I take part ?
Our Club time trials are ‘low key’. If you want a ride, there is a simple booking in system which opens up the weekend before the Thursday event. Book a ride and then just turn up on the evening, sign on, pin on your number and await your start time. Usually our events attract from 20 to 60 riders from many of the surrounding clubs, and all are open to beginners to come and try time trialling. It’s a pretty friendly and easy way to get a hang of the sport.
Afterwards we chat and have a well-deserved hot drink and usually a slice of cake too.

Note
Many of you will know that in August 2020 there were changes in Old Warden which included the introduction of a 20mph limit through the village.
Although such speed limits only motorized vehicles, we considered that this would mean slower traffic and increased risk for our faster riders given that the road through the village is relatively narrow with no pavements and parked cars. There is also a risk to the club's reputation so it is considered that it would now be unsuitable to run our TTs through the village.
This impacts directly on a number of the club’s TT courses
- 1z / 11.3 Evening League 11.3m TT
- 1z / 12.5 'The King of Hillfoot'
As a result we will introduce some new courses as below:
1z / 12.7 12.7mile course - Start / finish at the BRCC Clubhouse.
